Jane Craggs

Jane teaches inclusive and accessible yoga for peace and strength as one half of Svastha Yoga Manchester with Louise Tanner, offering workshops on a variety of therapeutic areas and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, as well as retreats in the UK and France.

She has been part of the Manchester Yoga community since setting up Yogaspace in 2002 in the then ' underground and edgy' Northern Quarter. With a dedicated team of lovely teachers a sangha was created and the beginnings of some lifelong associations. When Yogaspace closed its doors in 2005, the sangha continued as yoga teachers collective Manchester Yoga Shala, which ran successfully for 5 years. It was a wonderfully creative and heartfelt endeavour in a ramshackle building, and it was a beautiful container for some wonderful teachings and events.

She originally trained in Spain, trading her crazy life in touring theatre for the peace and steadiness of yoga teaching. She studied extensively with many inspirational teachers, most influentially Donna Farhi, before meeting the Mohan family. She feels very fortunate to have such dedicated and authentic teachers and does her best to pass on faithfully the teachings entrusted to her by them.

She continues her studies with them and is part of an international yoga community travelling to India and other parts of the world to complete trainings and following their online Yoga sutras study, as well as training in yoga therapy with their son, Dr Ganesh Mohan.

Svastha students have a small but supportive network,which feels like a family, sharing knowledge and expertise as well as mentoring.

Jane has always prioritised accessible and inclusive yoga and has set up a number of pioneering classes over the years including classes for Chronic fatigue, and adults with learning disabilities( 13 uninterrupted years!) and she now teaches for the Prison Phoenix trust which she finds inspiring and humbling.

She has also been working one to one with Yoga therapy since 2009 and has helped support clients with a range of conditions across mental and physical health spectrums.

She is passionate about helping to train new yoga teachers,and in her work for Yogacampus has helped support Northern teachers through teaching and mentoring in Hebden Bridge since 2011 and will now repeat this here in her adopted hometown, Manchester.

Jane absolutely loves India. Since 2002 she has travelled there annually, leading trekking and yoga adventures with small groups of yoga students and increasingly extending her stays until her 7 month sabbatical in 2009/10, when she studied Yoga Psychology with her teachers and also deepened her knowledge of Ayurveda, completing an Ayurvedic Therapy course. She has spent time all over the subcontinent, with extended periods in West Bengal, Orrissa and Tamil Nadu. She has through her many sponsored sun salutations raised funds for a number of charities and is currently raising funds for a village project near Bihar. She has also had many and varied adventures including sailing in the crocodile and Tiger infested Mangrove swamps of the Sunderbans at dawn with 4 other people and 200 blankets on what resembled a large piece of balsa wood!!

Her background in theatre( she originally trained and worked as a theatre designer) has been a surprisingly transferable skill, as have her years as part of a comedy double act ( yoga hecklers so far not a problem!). Jane's classes are friendly and accessible, and all are welcome to join. Yoga should be accessible to anyone who wishes to find peace and steadiness in a world that is anything but peaceful and steady!

    Yin YogaBook Now

    Yin Yoga is a practice where postures are held for 3 minutes or more. This length of time is used to open into the thicker layers of connective tissues around the joints that a moving, dynamic practice may not as effectively access. During this time of stillness, the physical, energetic, emotional and mental states of being are refined and aligned through heightened inner awareness. When this inner awareness is allowed to grow in stillness, knowledge is gained in maintaining a quiet and concious state at all times; whether the external environment is one of calm or chaos. Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to a dynamic (Yang) style practice and an extremely subtle and profound practice on its own, as through holding postures for sustained periods of time, we examine limits and explore potentials. The focus is on feeling as through practice we develop attentiveness and refine awareness. The practice is available to all wishing to slow down and soften.

    Mandala Flow - All LevelsBook Now

    A Mandala is a picture of a geometric pattern within a circle, representing the universe. Mandalas have been used for many years as a focusing tool for meditation across different traditions, both religious and secular. In Mandala Flow yoga we move in circles and spirals around the mat, stimulating both sides of the brain and accessing parts of the body and mind that we may not perhaps access when we move in a purely linear way.

    Each class focuses on an element, a chakra or a particular group of muscles, using rhythmic pulsations and repetition to encourage the body to open and go a little bit further with each rotation. The class will start and finish with Yin Yoga (static poses held for longer periods), in order to bring the mind into a meditative state and balance the yang flow of the Mandala. The class is designed to help you relax, renew and restore at the end of the week, preparing you for the week ahead.

    The Sanskrit word vinyasa means placing with awareness. Our vinyasa flow classes are built around varied and creative sequences of postures linked by the thread of the breath in a flowing style, sometimes interspersed with longer holds. Breath focus is integrated throughout the class, helping to centre and quieten the mind, and classes may include pranayama and seated meditation.

    Vinyasa flow classes tend to be more physically demanding than those described as Yoga as, in places, they flow more quickly and more energetically. They may be set to music to promote the connection with our inherent rhythm.

    This class is the merging of our Flow and Hot Yoga Styles, with varying sequences that gives you the chance to try new postures. In Fusion classes we encourage our teachers to express their preferred style of yoga set within the hot yoga environment. These classes are at a lower temperature than our pure hot classes so that you can explore your potential in a more challenging class, building your own internal heat. Warm fusion classes offer a balanced yoga practice to produce a state of inner calm and balance. Classes are often done to music.     Yin Yang YogaBook Now

    This class is split into two halves. Starting with the yang, the dynamic flow, to get the body moving and create internal heat. We will then move into the yin part which is the quieter more subtle practice. Yin Yoga is a practice where postures are held for 3 minutes or more. This length of time is used to open into the thicker layers of connective tissues around the joints that a moving, dynamic practice may not as effectively access. During this time of stillness, the physical, energetic, emotional and mental states of being are refined and aligned through heightened inner awareness. When this inner awareness is allowed to grow in stillness, knowledge is gained in maintaining a quiet and concious state at all times.
