Power Of Intention Yin Yang Workshop
With Gavin DeMarines
12 January 2019, 14:30–16:30
This workshop will begin with full meditation, pranayama and heart opening intentions. Our physical practice will start with Yin poses so that we clear the energy channels and cultivate a relaxed and focused state. We will then move into the Yang part of the practice with a faster, energetic sequence flowing through standing poses, balances, inversions and backbends. We will set aside specific time to explore handstands and headstands. Our circle will be completed by returning to a Yin state, settling our hearts, reflecting on our practice and setting our intentions for the New Year.
Yin Yang yoga is based on the Taoist concept of Yin (feminine)and Yang (masculine), opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things; yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect. In the body, the relatively stiff connective tissues are yin, while the more mobile and pliable muscles and blood are yang.
Connective tissue and the internal organs respond best to a slow, steady load so Yin poses are generally passive, floor-based and held for longer. It is in this space that the body and mind surrender their resistance and allow for the healthy flow of chi or prana - the life force.
Muscle and the respiratory system respond best to dynamic movement so a Yang practice reflects this by taking the body through it’s full range of movement in a flowing sequence that builds in intensity. Taken together, Yin and Yang practices bring balance to all the body’s systems and focus and clarity to the mind. Perfect for setting powerful intentions!
Suitable for all levels though some experience is beneficial
Meet the Teachers
Fiona has been practising yoga since the age of 14, when she attended her first class at the local village hall.
She was drawn to yoga for the physical aspect of the practice, and soon discovered the immense emotional and spiritual healing it can bring. After falling in love with Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in her twenties, Fiona completed her 200 hours Ashtanga and Rocket Yoga teacher training with The Yoga People in London, and did a further 100 hours teacher training in Yin Yoga with Sebastien Pucelle and Murielle Burellier. She has recently completed another 100 hours in Mandala flow and Shamanism.
